Flying into Paso Robles !

Silver Horse Wine
Wine Tasting at the Silver Horse

Best time of the year to go? My favorite is spring when the hills are green and the weather is cooler.
Flight time in a Super Viking from KAJO? 1.4
Food on the airport? No, the airport restaurant has closed.
Fuel on airport? Yes
Landing or Handling fees? None
Comments about arriving and departing.  Intersecting runways at an uncontrolled airport always scare me.
Things to do at or near the airport. WarBirds Museum on the airport. Several outstanding restaurants in town. Let's not forget wine tasting.
Rate this stop with 10 being best, 5 average. 8.5 - Slightly lowered score because you'll need a rental car for most places.

Paso Robles, a Great Weekend Getaway!

This is a really good stop and I've done it several times.

On the airport and often overlooked is the Estrella WarBirds Museum. The hours are limited so check their web site before you go. Don't park at the terminal for the museum. Taxi to the approach end of 31. Then turn towards the museum and park just off the taxiway.

On this day the Jet Center arranged a rental car for us and it was waiting on the flight line when we arrived. The staff was very helpful in giving us winery brochures and naming good places in town to eat.

Matthew's that used to be in the terminal has closed. Matthew's downtown is still alive and well. However, since you're getting transpiration for town don't limit yourself to any one place. Paso Robles is full of just outstanding places to eat. Many of them, including Mathew's, are located in the same area surrounding the Paso Robles City Park (12th and Spring, map below)  Just north of the park we found a great place called Artisin. Everything we had rated a 10 and the wait staff scored no less.

After you eat head out for some wine tasting and places to stop are pretty much unlimited. Seemed like most the places were north of town so we headed that way.  One popular stop is J.Lohr Winery just north of the airport. J.Lohr is only 1.5 miles from the airport but it's on a agriculture road without a sidewalk.

Further out and away from the crowds I really enjoyed the Silver Horse Winery. The Silver Horse is a very pretty place on a hill with a wonderful view of the vineyards. The owners daughter was pouring wine when we were there giving it a friendly feel.

I missed the Sculpterra Winery but plan to try this place next visit. Check out their website and I think you'll agree.

Mt. Olive Organic Farm has something for pilots to taste. Like the name says they have an olive tasting room.

If you're planning to spend the night you may want to try the Hotel Cheval. In addition there's a Marriott Courtyard in town.

Pictures from our trip !
Silver Horse Winery Paso Robles California We walked across the drive from the Silver Horse and sat in the shade overlook the rolling hills.
Wine Tasting at the Silver Horse Winery The Silver House Winery. A little off the beaten path, that's why I liked it.
Map of Paso Robles Winery Map of places to go in and around Paso Robles. Zoom in and rotate, you'll be able to read this. The airport isn't shown but it's off Airport Road south of Tower Road.
Lakeview Gusher Here's a link to the oil gusher I spoke of.
