Apple Valley Airport |
|
From
Abandoned and Little Known Airports: As the town of Apple
Valley expanded around the original airport, a new site was chosen
farther out of town, which would also provide for a longer runway.
The newly Apple Valley County Airport (3 miles northeast) was built
in 1970, at which point the original airport presumably closed.
According to Michael McMurtrey, "With
regard to the original Apple Valley airport, if you want to see what
it looked like, take a look at any of the 'Sky King' episodes
featuring the Cessna 310, for stock footage of the Songbird landing
at that airport was used in many of the episodes.
The house used as Sky's ranch house
was across the main road to the south, and the Songbird was
routinely taxied across the main highway (California Route 18) to
the house for filming!"
The new airport is really pretty nice.
A large runway with several hangers, large fuel island and a airport
cafe. There is an FBO on the airport called
MidField Aviation
which is very active. I've been inside and really like the feel of
the place. They do sponsor water balloon bombing events right in
front of the FBO.
